FAQ

Do you have a deadline for applications?

Deadline for applications is July 31st each year.

Is this scholarship only for those who are planning to start a business in the future, or could it just be for those people with financial need but do not plan on starting a business?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is that one of our mandates is to foster entrepreneurship in Alberta's youth and so one of the questions in the application is "Why do you want to be an entrepreneur?". This question has weighting in our judging and so it would be difficult to win without answering it.

I would encourage you to think about business/entrepreneurship as a career option and how that could play out in your future. You don't have to actually start the business, but explore the possibility in your mind and put forward something in the form of an answer to that question.

Is it possible to mail my application in as we are unable to upload letters of recommendation and acceptance.

Yes, applications can be mailed to:

Do I qualify if I am not going into a business program? I have financial need, and University will increase that need.

If I do not have financial need, can I still apply?

You can apply. Financial need is a consideration, but not the only consideration.

I was accepted into a program at an accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta, but have decided to accept an offer from a post-secondary institution outside of Alberta instead. Am I still eligible for the grant?

Unfortunately, no. Our grants are only open to those entering first year of studies at accredited Alberta post-secondary institutions.

I just finished my first year of university. Would I still be eligible to apply?

Our grants are only awarded to those entering their first year of post-secondary studies, so unfortunately no you would not be eligible to apply.

Why do you need my SIN number? If I am not comfortable sharing this information can I skip that section?

We need your SIN number because the winners of the education grants are issued T4A tax slips per Canada Revenue Agency Regulations.

I am currently in the first year of a program at an accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta. Next year I will be starting the first year or a different program at a different accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta. Since this will be my first year in the program, am I eligible for the grant?

Grants are available to those entering their first-year of post-secondary only. So under this scenario you would not be eligible.

Can I apply even though I am a grade 11 student who is a grade 12 student next year?

You most likely have not yet been accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution. You should instead apply in your grade 12 year.

I don't have a social insurance number and I can't apply for one yet. What can I do?

Unfortunately you need a SIN in order to be eligible. We must issue tax slips for the grants, hence this requirement.

Is it possible to use my enrolment verification instead of my admission acceptance letter, in the case that I won't be receiving my formal acceptance letter until after the scholarship deadline?

Yes. Letter of acceptance is sufficient.

I submitted my application and upon review to appears to not have saved my letters of recommendation. Am I just unable to view them after submission or are they not there?

Can the teacher be from any part of your education, including elementary?

Yes, your supporting letters can come from anyone who knows you and can speak to your character, skills and talents.

I have been unable to get in touch with a teacher for a reference letter. Would it be sufficient to provide letters from two other adults who can comment on my skills and attributes?

Yes, this is allowed under our rules.
